A normal rental service would NEVER have required this of us, but we felt we wanted to respect his car. We took the car to a car wash on our way to the airport and vacuumed the car extremely thoroughly. We were in Hawaii and got a little sand in the car which is pretty hard not to do if you are surfing and swimming all day long. When I dropped the car off the host was extremely rude an confrontational.
